Non-Matriculated (Special/Non-Degree) Application

U.S. citizens or permanent residents not seeking a graduate degree may be considered for non-matriculated, or special, student status. Non-degree study provides an opportunity to investigate a new career path or to expand knowledge in a particular area. Non-matriculated applicants enroll in graduate-level courses in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and must meet academic standards. Applicants must use the paper application listed below, and will be considered based on a review of a completed Non-Matriculated Application and an undergraduate transcript indicating degree conferral. Non-matriculated students are limited to a total of 18 credits in this status.

The following programs/departments do not allow special student enrollment:

  • Art Therapy
  • Music Business

  • Communicative Sciences and Disorders (formerly Speech Language Pathology)

Students interested in enrolling in courses in the departments listed below must first meet with a departmental adviser to obtain written permission to register prior to applying for non-matriculated status.
