Degree candidates must submit an online application (a paper application is no longer available). Non-degree candidates must submit a paper application (see below for further instructions).

Before creating an online account, candidates are strongly advised to review the detailed instructions (including deadline information) in our Graduate Application Guide. All materials must be received, not postmarked, by the appropriate deadline.



Non-Matriculated (Special/Non-Degree) Application

U.S. citizens or permanent residents not seeking a graduate degree may be considered for non-matriculated student status. Non-degree study provides an opportunity to investigate a new career path or to expand knowledge in a particular area. Non-matriculated applicants enroll in graduate-level courses in the Steinhardt School of Culture, Education, and Human Development and must meet academic standards. Applicants will be considered based on a review of a completed Non-Matriculated Application and an undergraduate transcript indicating degree conferral. Non-matriculated students are limited to a total of 18 credits in this status. Non-matriculated applicants must use the paper application listed below.

The following programs/departments do not allow special student enrollment:

  • Art Therapy
  • Music Business
  • Music Therapy
  • Physical Therapy
  • Communicative Sciences and Disorders (formerly Speech Language Pathology).

Students interested in enrolling in the courses listed below must first meet with a departmental advisor to obtain written permission to register, before applying for Non-matriculated status.

Global Programs

NYU Steinhardt Office of Academic Initiatives and Global Programs consist of: Summer Study Abroad, Intersession, and Spring Break.

Non-NYU candidates may be considered for these special programs as either a Non-Matriculated student or as a degree seeking student. To apply, you must complete and submit an application (either non-degree or degree) to the Office of Graduate Admissions AND a Global Programs application.  Learn more about the Global Programs application process by clicking below.
