Fellowships & Scholarships

Cooney Center Fellows Program
www.joanganzcooneycenter.org

The Joan Ganz Cooney Center at Sesame Workshop has a strong interest in supporting researchers, producers, educators, and policy makers who can stimulate the production and scale-up of innovative and developmentally-appropriate digital media products for young children.

The Cooney Center is currently accepting applications for its 2009-10 Cooney Center Fellows Program. The one-year, $50,000 fellowship attracts a wide range of talented scholars who have expertise in digital media, as well as communication, child development, education, and psychology. Fellows undertake an independent research project of their choosing and play a substantive role on projects directly related to the Center's priorities. For example, our 2007 Fellow Carly Shuler (who agreed to stay on an extra year) recently produced an insightful report on mobile learning, called Pockets of Potential, which we released at the Consumer Electronics Show in January. Our current Fellow Lori Takeuchi is leading two very important research projects-- one on the Internet search habits of low-SES children, and the other on the digital lives of young children and their caregivers.

Graduates of masters and doctoral programs, as well as current doctoral students wishing to supplement their studies are encouraged to apply. Please note that prior work and/or research experience in children's educational digital media is generally expected.

Applications are due April 1st and instructions can be downloaded from:

Elective Ideas for Summer Session 2009

Steinhardt's Sociology of Education Program, in the Department of Humanities and the Social Sciences in the Professions, is offering this course in Summer 2009.

E20.2371.001 – Social Inequality & Education
Call # 40957
Professor Floyd Hammack, Instructor
May 18-June 5, Monday through Thursday, 4:10PM - 6:25PM

This course centers on the consideration of the role of educational institutions in fostering, preventing, and maintaining equalities and inequalities in American society. It reviews the variety of ways education has been understood to intervene (or not) in the cross-generation inheritance of social positions and the social mobility barriers experienced by members of particular groups. The course finishes with an examination of how current educational reforms relate to these interventions.

Technology & Learning in Africa

Join the OLPCorps:Africa
http://laptop.org/en/participate/get-involved/OLPCorps.shtml

Active students spark revolutions and inspire movements. Our education movement is no different. With this in mind, we have started the OLPCorps Africa project. We are equipping teams of students from around the world with 100 XOs, hardware, training, and financial support to expand learning in Africa for children ages 6-12. We’re looking for agents of change capable of leading the first global grassroots movement in learning.

Student-led teams will:

* travel to one of the 53 African countries of their choosing for 9-10 weeks
* participate in a 10-day orientation in Kigali, Rwanda at OLPC’s office
* receive a $10,000 (USD) stipend to cover operating costs
* deploy 100 XO laptops, including hardware and support
* collaborate with up to 100 other teams as part of a life-long global network empowering a generation of children
* send one representative to MIT/OLPC’s all-expense paid summit from Oct 10th-12th 2009
