The Virtue of Forgetting in the Digital Age
Tuesday, October 6
4:00 PM - 5:30 PM
40 Washington Square South, Room 216

Viktor Mayer-Schonberger, Associate Professor, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, National University of Singapore argues that in our quest for perfect digital memories where we can store everything from recipes and family photographs to work emails and personal information, we've put ourselves in danger of losing a very human quality the ability and privilege of forgetting. Our digital memories have become double-edged swords we expect people to  remember  information that is stored in their computers, yet we also may find ourselves wishing to forget inappropriate pictures and mis-addressed emails. And, as Mayer-Schonberger demonstrates, it is becoming harder and harder to forget these things as digital media becomes more accessible and portable and the lines of ownership blur. Mayer-Schonberger examines the technology that is facilitating the end of forgetting: digitization, cheap storage and easy retrieval, global access, and increasingly powerful software and proposes an ingeniously simple solution: expiration dates on information.

The convergence of recent technologies, web and mobile technologies, provides unique opportunities and an infrastructure for both face to face and online learning environments. However, specific environments for constructing knowledge are needed. In such environments, knowledge media should bring together the technology and learning theories to form meaningful settings for learners with different academic, administrative and support needs. IETC2010 aims to provide an environment for experts to discuss the current state of the art for learning in schools, industry and universities. Virtual environments, CSCL, m-learning, e-training and e-learning will be topics of particular interest.

The scope of the conference will cover but not be limited to:

  • Asynchronous learning
  • Authoring technology
  • Best practices in ICT classrooms
  • Constructivist perspectives
  • Cooperative/collaborative learning
  • Data mining strategies for e-learning organizations
  • Distance and open learning
  • Educational technology & globalization
  • Human resources in educational technology

OSRA 29th Annual Research Conference
End-User Information Systems - Transforming the Workplace
December 15-18, 2009

OSRA is a special interest group of the Association for Information Systems (AIS SIG OSRA), with an emphasis on end-user information systems, knowledge management, and workplace performance. Its mission is to promote research and application of information technology in the end-user environment to support work processes, improve employee performance, and enhance overall organizational effectiveness.

Call for Papers
This year’s SIG OSRA Workshop will focus on the challenges of supporting an increasingly diverse, global work force with an expanding array of end-user technologies. From desktops to mobile devices and from word processing to virtual environments and social networking, supporting technology in the end user environment has become increasingly complex. New technologies are literally transforming the workplace as characterized aptly by the change in the typical telephone greeting from the standard “hello” to “where are you?” The Organizational System Research Association (OSRA) invites papers, panels, and speakers to address the interplay of information systems and the workplace environment. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:

  • Web 2.0 in the workplace
  • Use of virtual environments in the workplace for meetings, training, employee orientation, etc.
  • Social media as workplace tools
  • Knowledge management--models for delivery, design, and implementation
  • KM and IT in healthcare and health information exchange"
  • Transforming healthcare with health information technology and exchange
  • IT, innovation, and organizational change
  • Mobile computing and the knowledge economy
  • Business process management and redesign
  • Curricular design, development, and assessment
  • Workplace behavior and IT
  • Information technologies in hospitality and tourism
  • Distance learning technologies and applications
  • Organization culture and technology
  • Issues and impact of enterprise information assurance and security
  • Qualitative and ethnographic IT research strategies/methodologies
  • Knowledge, collaboration and culture
  • Collaboration and group technologies
  • Industry specific applications of end-user technologies

Both refereed and non-refereed presentations are invited.
Please submit abstracts electronically to Dr Bridget O’Connor, New York University, Call for Papers Coordinator (bridget.oconnor@nyu.edu) on or before October 15, 2009. For papers to appear in the proceedings, at least one author must register for the conference.

For consideration for the best paper award, submit the full manuscript by November 1, 2009. See the submission guidelines at http://www.osra.org for more details.
