CURATORS' STATEMENT
Valerie Hammond and Kiki Smith have co-taught Advanced Printmaking at NYU for the past several years. This experience, our commitment to printmaking, and our long shared enthusiasm for the limitless possibilities of paper as a material, has inspired us to want to share our enthusiasm with the school’s community.
For this exhibition they selected a group of artists from their community whose work with paper they admire and find inspiring. Hilary Harnischfeger builds sculpture from paper and other materials; Carl Fudge employs papermaking in the creation of his work; Fudge, Michael Byron, and several other artists in the exhibition work with paper through the techniques of printmaking; Kathleen Graves makes digital prints from photo-based images; Chie Fueki constructs collages by combining printmaking with other elements, an approach shared by the curators themselves; while Francesco Clemente, Julia Fish, Beka Goedde, Antony Hegarty, Stephen Mueller, and Zachary Wollard draw or paint directly onto paper, approaching the material as a field for exploration, action, and thought.. Each artist’s use of paper is a vital and integral part of his or her practice, and each finds a unique approach to working with the material.
