NYU Steinhardt's Department of Art and Art Professions is pleased to announce that pioneering video artist and studio art faculty member Peter Campus will assume the position of Director for the 80wse, as well as for the exhibition program for the Broadway Windows and Washington Square Windows.
Peter Campus has been an influential force in contemporary art for more than 40 years, creating work with an exacting concern for formal composition. Working alongside artists like Robert Smithson, Bruce Nauman, and Joan Jonas, Campus shifted art's focus away from the production of art objects and towards an investigation of personal identity, physical space, and social systems. His vision for 80wse will bring an equally challenging agenda to its three spaces in the heart of Greenwich Village. The galleries will function as a home for artists testing new ideas, and a space where both the art world and the downtown community are invited to engage with some of the university's most innovative projects.
80wse will display exhibitions featuring the work of professional artists and curated by professional curators, as well as exhibitions curated by faculty, students, and alumni. The Department's MFA exhibitions will continue to be held in the space each spring. The two Steinhardt Windows Galleries: Broadway Windows at Broadway and East 10th Street, and Washington Square Windows, on the east side of Washington Square Park will continue to feature professional artists.
Peter Campus began making his closed-circuit video installations in the 1970s and, since then, has continued to incorporate new technologies into his work. His works have been featured in the Whitney Biennial in 1973, 1993 and 2002 and are held in collections around the world, including the Centre Pompidou (Paris), The Guggenheim Museum, The Whitney Museum of American Art and SFMOMA. Campus' work can currently be seen in the Whitney Museum's Storefront along Madison Avenue in New York, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, as well as in "youniverse”, the 3rd International Biennial of Contemporary Art in Seville, Spain, an exhibition organized by Peter Weibel, General Director of the ZKM Center for Art and Media.
Located in New York's legendary East Village, NYU Steinhardt's Department of Art and Art Professions is closely tied to the international art world in all its dimensions. The department's interdisciplinary approach to art, with its commitment to autonomy and experimentation as well as research, collaboration, and community practice, underscores the central role of visual art within contemporary culture.
